Associate Professor Jeffrey Lefkovits

General and interventional cardiology

Associate Professor Jeffrey Lefkovits is a cardiologist specialising in coronary interventions, with a strong commitment to clinical practice, research and public health.

After graduating from the University of Melbourne in 1986, he commenced physician training at The Royal Melbourne Hospital and completed his advanced training in cardiology at the Alfred Hospital. He then undertook sub-specialty training in interventional cardiology for a further two years at the renowned Cleveland Clinic in the USA.

He has been on staff as an interventional cardiologist at The Royal Melbourne Hospital since 1995, and is Director of the Cardiac Catheterisation Laboratory. His academic position as Associate Professor is with the Department of Epidemiology and Preventive Medicine, Monash University. His private clinical practice, as a general and interventional cardiologist, is based at Cabrini Health, Malvern.

A/Prof Lefkovits has had more than 20 years’ experience in clinical practice dealing with the full spectrum of cardiology including coronary heart disease, heart failure and heart rhythm disturbances. His main clinical focus in on the treatment of acute coronary syndromes, particularly through the use of percutaneous coronary interventions (PCI) including balloon angioplasty, stent insertion and advanced techniques such as rotational atherectomy.

With his interest in public health and quality assurance in clinical care, he headed up the Cardiac Clinical Network with the Department of Health, Victoria from 2009 to 2014. He is now the Clinical Director of the Victorian Cardiac Outcomes Registry (VCOR) – a state-wide clinical quality registry that benchmarks the safety and effectiveness of cardiac procedures and treatments. He has had a long association with clinical research, having published more than 50 papers in peer-reviewed journals and authored several book chapters.
